Thought:
Looking at Jeremiah 5:30-31 this morning. If I asked you what have you seen or heard recently that is appalling and horrible? We could mention some environmental disasters--floods, record cold, blizzards, storms, volcanoes. We could speak of crimes--murders, mass shootings, road rage incidents. We could talk about the 6 year-old who sot the teacher. We could ponder the war in the Ukraine. We could even talk about some of the political activities, corruption. Or we could talk about the schools, the homeless, or some other social problem. We could talk about gender issues, abortion, movies or television. But look at these verses. What did the Lord find appalling and horrible?
  • Prophets prophesy falsely. Those who are supposed to speak God's truth to the people. Those that are supposed to warn and alert the people to the coming danger. Those who are to point out the sins and iniquity of the people. Those that are to call people to repentance. All of these are speaking falsely. How? They were telling the people not to worry, they were fine. Don't worry, God will intervene and stop the Babylonians. Ignore what happened to the Northern Kingdom when it failed to repent. What do you see today? Leaders call evil good and good evil. Leaders fail to warn of the coming accountability. Leaders say every lifestyle is acceptable.
  • Priests rule on their own authority. What about the preachers? They forsake the Holy Word of God and teach their own stuff. Marriage--forget about genders. Lifestyle--doesn't matter. God loves everyone and would not send anyone to hell, if there is a hell. The Bible was good for that era, but times have changed and we need new thinking for a new day.
  • My people love it so. And we listen and accept. As the New Testament says, we seek leaders who tickle our ears with exactly what we want to hear. We adopt philosophies--I'm O'K, you are O'K. We don't rock the boat. Live and let live. Don't want to get involved.
God has a question for us at the end of chapter 5. "What will you do at the end of it?" What will you do when your days end or Jesus comes again. How will all this play out when time shall be no more? That was the question to the tribe of Judah in 600 BC. It may be the question to our nation, our churches, and each of us today. There is a way that seems right to man, but the end thereof is destruction.

Lord, help me trust Your word, seek Your kingdom, and proclaim Your truth.

Blessings
Larry
