Thought:
Reading 2 Corinthians 1 this morning, focused on 1:5. I really need to grasp this truth. The comfort of Christ is abundant to meet the abundance of suffering we face. Do I really get that? The grace of God flowing to me through Jesus is as great or greater than the suffering I may experience for His sake. Sometimes when I suffer, I think that God does not hear, that God does not understand, that God does not give me sufficient help or relief. But here I read that God's abundant comfort is sufficient to cover any suffering I may encounter in this life. God sent me the Holy Spirit as the Great Comforter. This reminds me that comfort means with power. The Spirit does not come to me and say "now now everything will be all right." The Spirit comes with power to give me strength to endure, sustain and conquer.
Reading this reminds me of another passage. James 1:2 tells me to consider it all joy when I encounter various trials. The word that is translated "various" in this verse is translated "manifold" in 1 Peter 4:10, where it describes the manifold grace of God. I learn from these verses that with my various or manifold trials, God has a matching manifold grace--a grace that is sufficient to meet that trial. So, the grace of God meets every trial and I am comforted by knowing that in every trial, His grace is sufficient. In the front of my Bible I have written a quote attributed to Corrie Ten Boom -- God does not give dying grace until a dying day. This tells me that God gives sufficient grace for every day.And I take great comfort in the fact that His grace is always sufficient.
Notice 1:6. Paul tells me that knowing that God gives comfort to meet every suffering and grace to meet every trial allows me, strengthens me to patiently endure. Lord, help me to rely on Your amazing grace and loving comfort to meet the trials of today.
Blessings
Larry
