Thought:
Reading in Jeremiah this morning. His words from the Lord were received during the reigns of Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah. Jeremiah preached during the exiles of Daniel [605 BC], the second exile in 597 BC and the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. He warned about and saw God fulfill His discipline on Judah. Ezekiel, Habakkuk and a portion of Daniel were written during this same period. We think Jeremiah was about 20 when he was called by the Lord. I am reading 1:1-10 this morning, although I got stuck on 1:5 as you will see.
What if the Lord spoke audibly to you this morning with the message of 1:5? How would you respond? That is what I am asking myself.
- God knew Jeremiah before he was formed in his mother's womb. Before man knew , before your mother knew--God knew. How awesome is it that the King of the universe knew you before you were even conceived in human form. So when God speaks in Jeremiah 29 and says that He knows the plans He has for us, He is not scrambling around every day trying to get a plan ready for our lives. He made plans before we were even detectable by human means. All around us are people seeking purpose and a plan for their lives. They read books, take assessments, seek consultants, hire a coach. And none of that is bad, but the first thing we all need to do is ask the Master Creator about the plan He has for us. This applies even for us "senior citizens." God made a plan for our whole life. While I may retire from my occupation or profession, while my body and mind may lose some vitality, He still has a plan for us.
- God consecrated Jeremiah before he was born. We were created in His image and He set us apart for His service. We seek our calling in the Lord, but He had the calling long before. He chooses to reveal it as we need to know.
- God appointed Jeremiah a prophet to speak for Him to the nations. Sounds like the great commission. When we were saved, we were set apart and called to His service with the assignment of making disciples so that people from every tribe and nation would know Him.
As a young man called into God's service, how wonderful and gracious that God let him know that this wasn't spur of the moment, whimsy. This was part of an eternal plan created in the mind of God long ago. How does knowing that God created a plan especially for you and that He is there to help you fulfill that calling change how you see today--just another day or do we ask to receive the specific assignment He has planned for today.
Blessings
Larry
