Thought:
Reading Jeremiah 33:3-18 today. Jeremiah is still in jail for telling the truth. I think Jeremiah may have been asking God how in the world He would do all that He promised in chapter 32. God answers and tells Jeremiah:
- Call to me.
- I will answer.
- I will tell you great and mighty things you do not know.
I need to hear this and believe it. In jail for doing God's work and speaking God's truth. The enemy surrounding the city and God has told Jeremiah the city will fall. But God has also told Jeremiah there will be a new day when the captives will return and safety and peace will reign. Like me, Jeremiah wonders how in the world God will do that. So God invites Jeremiah to call to Him for wisdom and truth. And God promises to answer and tell us mighty things we do not know. I need to know that today. God how are you going to accomplish Your plan? Circumstances seem impossible. Nothing is too difficult for God. Now notice some of the things God says in response to Jeremiah's call:
- 33:6--although the Babylonians are destroying, God will restore health and healing. And God will reveal an abundance of peace and truth. I think it is important for me to hear that God did not promise an abundance of stuff [although He surely blesses us physically]. He promises peace and truth--the things I really need.
- 33:10--11-There may seem to be only desolation and destruction, but God will restore and there will be joy and gladness. Sounds like what He does in salvation--from darkness and hopelessness to wholeness and light and joy and gladness.
- 33:15-- how will God do this? A Branch of David will spring forth with justice and righteousness. And God kept that promise. And His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. And His kingdom will have no end.
I am amazed that God spoke to Jeremiah in the face of the fall and destruction of Jerusalem with a promise that Jerusalem would be restored and a King would reign in truth and righteousness. Over 500 years later, the promise is fulfilled. Now, I read Revelation. I'm not sure how long in earthly years I must wait for His promise to be fulfilled--but it will happen--because the mouth of the Lord has spoken it. That's good news worth sharing.
Blessings
Larry
