Thought:
Still in Amos this morning. Despite all the false worship and bad conduct mentioned yesterday, God still has compassion and invites Israel to return to Me. But notice what God says to the people. God sent warnings calling us to return: a famine [4:6], a drought [4:7-8], wind, mildew and the caterpillar [4:9], plague [4:10], and military defeats [4:11]. And then 5 times God says, yet you did not return.

Wonder what the list would look like for us? September 11, Covid, Aids, Afghanistan, drought, mortgage crisis of 2008. And yet you did not return. What is the answer? God gives it in 5:4-6-- seek God that you may live, seek good that you may live, hate evil and love good so that you may live.

And if we do that, God will keep every promise: restore David's throne, a new Jerusalem, restore prosperity, gather His people to be with Him forever. [9:11-15]

In these days before the election as we pray for our country, I am thinking about a speech. In January each year, to fulfill a Constitutional duty, the President gives a speech--the State of the Union. Think with me this morning about the speech God would give to us about the State of our Nation. And then think about the speech Jesus might give to me about the State of Larry this morning. Have I, like Israel, become citified, cultural, wealthy, false sense of security, arrogant, proud. Maybe God is saying to me--seek the Lord that you may live, abundantly. Amos may have been writing to us as well.

Blessings
Larry
