Thought:
Ever really think about Psalm 133? We sometimes read the first verse of this psalm when we talk about unity in the body of Christ or perhaps as a reference when we are studying Ephesians 4. Notice that this psalm is a psalm of ascents by David. A psalm meant to be sung by worshippers as they marched to Jerusalem. Now think about how you approach church on Sunday morning. Does 133:1 reflect your heart and your attitude? The world is filled with conflict and strife, but in the house of the Lord, there is unity.
As you drive to worship are you thinking about the great opportunity and blessing of joining together with brothers and sisters in prayer--lifting your praises and cares to the Lord. Are you thinking about the privilege to join with sisters and brothers in songs of praise and adoration---choir practice for heaven when millions upon millions gather at the throne of grace to sing worthy is the Lamb. Are you thinking about the blessing of hearing the gospel proclaimed freely as our thoughts and hearts are united in focusing upon Jesus. OR, are you like me sometimes--thinking about someone who talks too much in class, worried they won’t sing a song I like, concerned that the sermon may last too long. Hoping I don’t run into so and so because I am mad at them, don't like them.
OR maybe instead of preparing my heart and mind for the union of fellow believers, I am thinking about a dispute with the children or the spouse, Maybe thinking about what I have to do after church or on Monday. Worried about what I didn't get done last week. Hoping the teacher or preacher doesn’t tell me I need to sign up for another service opportunity.
Look at verse 3--when brothers and sisters dwell together in unity, harmony--they make a beautiful melody to the Lord. But notice--we live and dwell in love and unity because we share in eternal life. We are eternally living together--now on earth, then forever in heaven. Everything is harmony and unity in heaven--I need to begin experiencing that today on earth. Spurgeon once said--a little faith will get you to heaven. Great faith will bring heaven to earth. May our faith in God and His promises and our obedience to His commands bring heaven to our churches and to our lives.
Blessings
Larry
