Thought:
Today I am just meditating on the last verses of Psalm 72. The book of Psalms was originally divided in five books or scrolls. Psalm 72 is the last psalm in Book 2, so verses 18-20 form a benediction for the Book. Think about starting each day with these words in your mouth:
  • Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel. [72:18] Just think about those words. All praise, honor and glory to the Lord God, the God of Israel. Then personalize the verse--praise to the Lord God, the God of [insert your name]. This verse helps me remember that the Lord [Master] is God and I am not. It reminds me that HE is the Master and I am not. Starting the day by getting the order correctly sets me up for a blessed day. He is God and He is my Lord.
  • God alone works wonders. [72:18] Every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of Lights. Anything good in my life is His gracious gift. Gracious because I neither deserved it or earned it. This also reminds me to view God with awe and wonder. He created, He sustains, He provides. He knows my name and yet He is creator of the universe.
  • Blessed be His name. [72:19] This reminds me that His name is above every name and at His name every knee will bow. We pray in His name. We called on His name for salvation. And this may lead to singing that hymn, "Blessed be the Name."  Charles Wesley wrote this hymn on the first anniversary of his salvation. The hymn we sing was the 7th stanza of an 18 stanza hymn. When John Wesley compiled his "Collection of Hymns" in 1780, the 7th stanza became the first hymn in the book with stanzas 7-10 being the entire hymn. Think about what Wesley says about "Blessed be the Name"--it calms my fears; it is sweet music in a sinner's ear; it breaks the power of canceled sin.
  • May the earth be filled with His glory. [72:19]. What a day to imagine. What a day to pray for. The whole earth filled with the glory of God--a day we will see when Jesus returns in glory and power.
Blessings
Larry
