Thought:
Chapter 10 of Jeremiah is God's word telling the people to compare Him, the living God, to the gods/idols they have followed. This passage really speaks to me as I think about where I seek information, wisdom, truth. Where I spend my time and resources. God says that those that worship idols are stupid, foolish and delusional. [10:8] Interesting that those are words the secular world might use to describe someone totally dedicated to following Jesus. If fact, it's what the contemporaries and religious leaders said of Jesus. God gives Jeremiah a list of reasons not to follow idols and a list of reasons why He is the only true and living God.
  • Idols are made by man, God created everything. [10:3,9, 12, 16]
  • Idols are dead and temporary, God is living and eternal. 10:4, 5, 11, 15, 10]
  • Idols should not be feared, God is to be greatly feared. [10:5, 10:10]
  • Idols are deceitful and lie, God is truth. [10:14]
  • Idols are worthless, God is great and mighty. [10:15, 6]
Take a look at Psalm 115 this morning. It presents similar truths about idols, but contains a verse that hits home with me. "Those who make them will become like them, everyone who trusts in them." What a verse for today. If I make an idol and trust the idol, I become like that idol. We see that with kids and adults---we choose someone or something to idolize. then, we want to talk like that person, dress like that person, act like that person. Sports, politics, entertainment, business---we pick an idol and then we become like that idol. God says don't pick an idol, they cannot help you [10:5]. Pick Jesus--then talk like Him, walk like Him, follow Him, listen to Him, obey Him, trust Him. Today I am thinking about those that I try and be like, want to be like, maybe even envy. Lord, forgive me--You are the only one worthy to be followed. The word tells us that we are to conformed to His image, not the worlds image. Lord, help us.

Blessing
Larry
