Thought:
We often sing a song in church called "Ancient Words." Take a look at the lyrics this morning:
Holy words long preserved for our walk in this world,
They resound with God' own heart,
Oh, let the ancient words impart.
Words of life, words of hope
Give us strength, help us cope
In this world where e'er we roam
Ancient words will guide us home
Holy words of our faith handed down to this age
Came to us through sacrifice, Oh heed the faithful words of Christ
Ancient words ever true
Changing me and changing you
We have come with open hearts
Oh let the ancient words impart.

Now take a look at Jeremiah 6:16. "See and ask for the ancient paths where the good way is, and walk in it; and you shall find rest for your souls."  The people in Judah had forgotten the ancient words, the truths of God, the promises and warning of the word. What do you think the people hearing Jeremiah would think about this statement? I don't think we have to look far--just look around our world today. The word says marriage is between a man and a woman for life--we ignore, forget, or reinterpret to our modern ways. The church is struggling to stick to the ancient words--the Pope says the church can bless same sex marriage, Methodist split over the same issue. The word says life is precious and holy, but we struggle with abortion.

Look back with me at what Jeremiah may have referred to in Leviticus 26. The chapter begins with God saying to avoid idols, keep the sabbath. Then look at verse 3--IF you walk in my statues and keep my commandments, God will:

  • Grant rain so the land will yield produce [26:4]
  • Give food in abundance [26:5]
  • Give security [26:5]
  • Grant peace [26:6]
  • Defeat your enemies [26:7-8]
  • Make us fruitful and multiply. [26:9]
  • Confirm His covenant with us [26:9]
  • Dwell among us [26:11]
  • Never reject us [26:11]
  • Walk among us as His people [26:12]
Think about your prayers--most of what we pray for is already promised if we walk in the Word and obey. These ancient words are ever true. These ancient words can change you and me if we trust and obey. Perhaps we just need to open our hearts and let the ancient words fill us again.

Blessings
Larry
