Thought:
Reading 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 this morning, much of which is underlined, bracketed, or marked with an asterisk in my Bible. I am pondering verse 12. "We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God that we might know the things freely given to us by God."
  • When I was lost, I walked by the spirit of the world. My thinking and ideas were formed by the ways of the world. But when I accepted Christ, I received the Spirit that is from God, the Holy Spirit. Notice what Paul says about the spirit of the world--its wisdom, its rulers are passing away. [2:6] They are temporary, not eternal.
  • The Spirit that is from God existed from the beginning and its wisdom was planned to lead us to glory [2:7]; however, the wisdom is a mystery that had to be revealed by God, we could not gain it without God revealing it. Through the Holy Spirit, God has revealed the wisdom established before the foundations of the world--and this wisdom is so great, so powerful, so wonderful that our eyes and ears could not have conceived of it. [2:8]
  • What is the revelation? The Holy Spirit knows the thoughts of God and reveals them to us. Notice, the Spirit reveals the thoughts of God to us so that we know the things God freely gives to us. What are those things? The first is Jesus--for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. And through Jesus, what else did God freely give--the riches of God, eternal life, a relationship with God, the joy of Christ, the love of Christ, the peace of Christ, everything we need for this life and the next. I could list many more, but you can add to the list.
  • So what do we do? We combine spiritual thoughts given by the Holy Spirit with spiritual words so that we can proclaim the gospel, live the gospel. [2:13]
  • God has revealed His wisdom to us not so we can instruct Him, debate with Him, but so that we can have the same mind that is in Christ--not conforming to this world, but being transformed by the renewing of our minds to the mind of Christ. [2:16]
Lord, today conform my thoughts to Your thoughts. Help me allow the mind of Christ to take over fully my mind so that every thought is captive to You. Look at what Paul says to the Corinthians in 2 Corinthians 10:3-5--we are in a war and "we are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ." The Holy Spirit reveals the mind of Christ--our job is to take every thought captive to obedience to Christ. May it be so today.

Blessings
Larry
