Thought:
Yesterday I was pondering John 14, specifically Jesus command that we not have troubled hearts by believing in Him--believing that He has prepared a special place for us, that He will come and take us to that place, and that He will abide with us in that place forever. Reminds me of what Paul says--Jesus is the source, the force and the course--from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. He is the source, the creator of all in this world and the next. He is the Way, the course---as those in Christ go to Him forever. He is the force--we go in Him for He is the Life.

In chapter 14, Jesus also promises the Holy Spirit. Jesus is going away. We are not to be troubled because we believe that He is coming back to get us and that we will be with Him forever in a place He has prepared. But what are we to do until He comes back to get us? He sends "another Helper." This reminds me that God sent Jesus to help us--He was our helper, redeemer, Savior. He goes back to the Father and we receive "another" Helper--the Holy Spirit. So this is another reason why we should not be troubled--Jesus did not leave us alone until He comes again, He gave us the Holy Spirit to live in and through us until He comes. What does the Holy Spirit do to calm our hearts and souls?
  • He is the Spirit of Truth [14:17]. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. The Holy Spirit is Truth. Why is it important that the Spirit is Truth? He is our guide--we need a truthful guide. Satan is the great deceiver, liar and the father of lies. The Spirit of Truth defeats and exposes the lies of the Devil.
  • He teaches us all things [14:26]. The Holy Spirit is God, a person of the Trinity. So He has all the qualities and character of God. This means He has all wisdom and all knowledge. He was there in the beginning. He has seen everything. So He has the authority to teach and guide us. The Spirit teaches us about love, joy, peace. He teaches us gentleness, kindness and patience. Everything I need to know to live a life for Christ the Holy Spirit can teach me.
  • He helps us remember [14:26] Aren't you glad! He helps us remember what Jesus said and did. At just the right time, He brings the right scripture into my mind. At just the right time, He helps me remember how Jesus reacted to rejection, hatred, anger. Today, most of us carry around a reminder with us--our phone. It reminds us of birthdays, anniversaries, special occasions, appointments, commitments. But the Holy spirit does so much more--He helps us remember the way Jesus lived so that we can follow His example.
Today, don't let your heart be troubled--believe in Jesus and trust the Holy Spirit. Jesus made promises and the Spirit helps us remember them.

Blessings
Larry
