Thought:
As we continue our travels through New Mexico this week, I am thinking about what Jesus said to the 7 churches in Revelation. Ephesus lost its first love, Smyrna had been faithful in the place where Satan's seat was located and faced new afflictions, Pergamum had compromised with the culture and with doctrine. Now Jesus speaks to Thyatira.

Thyatira must have been a really good church. Jesus commends their love, faithfulness and service---all enduring through challenges. What could be wrong with a church that is known for love, faith, service and endurance. All of us would like to be part of a church with those characteristics.

Apparently some in the church had been seduced by a prophetess who introduced them to "secret things". Throughout the ages, the church has been challenged by those who came saying they had found something new, something additional, something special. A new way to worship; a new revelation from God; a better way; a special gift; a secret ceremony; another rite. Here, the deception was that certain forms of sexual immorality were not sins---think about homosexuality, gender assignment, same-sex marriages. And the church was told that eating food sacrificed to idols was fine, won't hurt you, does't impact your witness. Not a big deal. Today, maybe that is watching certain movies, listening to certain music, honoring certain athletes or entertainers.

This letter is a reminder to me to watch out for the schemes of Satan who would lead us astray with claims of better ideas or perhaps the thought that this won't impact me, I am strong---I can watch, listen, participate without being tainted. Lord, keep me focused on You and Your Word and let me listen only to what You say is right and wrong.

Blessings
Larry
