Thought:
Reading John 16:5-15 this morning.Jesus again tells his disciples He is going away. Looking at their faces and knowing their hearts, He recognizes sorrow in their hearts [16:6]. Some of you have had these conversations--I have to do something, go somewhere and you will miss me, but it is for your good. Or perhaps the reverse, you took your child to college and as you were leaving, it was sorrowful, but you knew that it was necessary and for their ultimate good. Jesus tells the disciples why this is good for them:
When He goes, the Holy Spirit will come. Jesus was not going to leave the disciples or us helpless--He would send another Helper. How was the Holy Spirit going to help?
- Convict the world concerning sin. We are convicted of sin when we see and understand the perfection and plan of God. Seeing Him reminds us of who we are. When Jesus goes away, the world needs the holiness of God to clearly point out the sin of the world. So the Spirit comes and presents God's way and the way I have chosen and I recognize my sin.
- Convict the world of righteousness. Jesus says that while He is walking in the flesh, we could see what righteousness looked like [16:10], but when He goes to the Father, we will need someone else to teach us about righteousness--doing things the Right way, God's way.
- Convict the world concerning judgment. Jesus wants the world to know that Satan [the ruler of this world] has been judged. And with the resurrection, Satan has been defeated. The Spirit comes to teach us and remind us that Jesus has won the victory.
- Guide us into all truth [16:13]. Here is some good news. The Spirit guides into ALL truth. Satan deals in half-truths, deceits, schemes, devices. The Spirit guides us into Truth.
- Glorify Jesus [16:14]. Notice, the Spirit glorifies Christ by disclosing everything about Jesus. Through the Spirit we see the glory, majesty, power, beauty, of Jesus. This reminds me that I give Christ glory when my life reveals, discloses Christ to the world. We used to sing that old hymn, "Let Others See Jesus in You." When others see Jesus in us, He is glorified.
Thank you Jesus for sending the Holy Spirit--to convict and show us our sin, to show us the Right Way, to remind us that Satan is defeated and judged, to guide us into all truth and as we walk in that truth, to give Jesus glory. Help us hear and yield to Your Holy Spirit.
Blessings
Larry
